Gary Portnoy is best known for singing and co-writing “Where Everybody Knows Your Name”, the theme from the television series “Cheers” (for which he and Judy Hart Angelo received an Emmy nomination.)
His song “According To Our New Arrival”, as performed by Leon Redbone, was the theme to the long running ABC sitcom “Mr. Belvedere.” Gary also sang and co-wrote the themes to “Punky Brewster”, “Marblehead Manor”, and “The Popcorn Kid.”
Prior to his television work, Gary released a self-titled album on Columbia Records. One of the songs from that LP, “Say Goodnight”, was subsequently recorded by Dolly Parton (who is not known for covering other writers’ material.) Others of his compositions were cut by Glen Campbell, Mac Davis, Roberto Carlos, Englebert Humperdinck, Keith Barrow, and Samantha Sang.
Gary’s song “I’ll Never Get Enough Of You” (co-written with Jeanne Napoli and Judy Quay) was included on Air Supply’s multiplatinum album, “The One That You Love” and was a Top Ten single in Japan.
In addition to sitcoms, Gary contributed music for the television series, “Fame”. One of those songs, “I Still Believe In Me” (co-written with Susan Sheridan) was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music and Lyrics.
In a rare public appearance, Gary performed “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” along with the cast of “Cheers” on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” following the airing of the final episode of “Cheers.”
Gary’s most recent release, “Pushing Sixty” (2017) is available on Argentum Records.
